Interfaith Youth Training on MLK Day

Open to teens (ages 14-17) from the greater Summit area
Sunday evening, January 15, 6:30 – 9 pm at the Unitarian Church of Summit (please note: this is a NEW LOCATION). View the film “Not in our Town” followed by a discussion (snacks provided!)
Monday, January 16, 9 am – 4 pm at Calvary Episcopal Church in Parish Hall. ”Stranger to Neighbor Training” with Rev. David Fraccaro of the Interfaith Youth Core (lunch provided!)
Follow-Up Activities: Monthly Meetings for organizing campaigns and Trip to Washington, DC (including Holocaust Museum, Lincoln Memorial and MLK Memorial)

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

What: Summit Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

When: Sunday, November 20 at 5:00pm

Where: Fountain Baptist Church, 116 Glenside Avenue, Summit.

Who: The entire Summit Community is welcome. No RSVP necessary. No charge to attend.

Details: We will be welcoming Josh Stanton and Frank Fredericks, alumni of the Interfaith Youth Core, who together have co-founded Religious Freedom USA, a New York City-based initiative that seeks to defend the core American value of religious freedom. They will be helping the Summit Interfaith Council kick off a year-long project called “From Stranger to Neighbor.”

More Details: In partnership with Shaping Summit Together, we will also be starting Summit’s annual One Book One Community program. This year’s book is “Acts of Faith” by Eboo Patel, founder of the Interfaith Youth Core. The Interfaith Council has donated a number of copies to the Summit Public Library.

9/11 Memorial Service on the Village Green – 8:30am

The entire community is invited to come together on Sunday, September 11, as we all commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The service will begin at 8:30am, and will include a moment of silence at 8:46am – when the first plane struck the WTC. All are welcome.

A Prayer in Response to the Earthquake and Tsunami

Dear God,

Many, many images of God have been lost in earthquake

and fire and mighty waters just yesterday.

And so we turn to You, Adonai,

and we ask for Your strength and comfort.

We open our hearts one to the other

as brothers and sisters struggling in Your world.

“Above the thunder of the mighty waters,

more majestic than the breakers of the sea is Adonai (Ps. 93:4).”

Be with us as we offer what we can, through prayer and action,

to our sisters and brothers who are suffering in Japan

and who stand on alert around the world.

We ask for You to be the still, small voice after the fire,

allowing space for mourning and hope in the face of tragedy.

We see Your sheltering Presence and Your holy tears

in the receding waters of the Tsunami

and in the rescue work being carried out

by so many for the sake of a fragile world.

May it be Your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors,

to send healing to the injured and comfort to those in mourning.

May You be with those who are engaged in the sacred work of rescue.

Be with us as we bring shelter, food, and water to those in need.

May we merit to save many lives.

May those affected by this disaster know Your comfort.

May we act when we learn how we can help.

May our world be blessed by peace.

Amen.

Habitat Interfaith Build – Volunteer Orientation & Supervisor Training

Two Habitat Volunteer Orientation Sessions: 6:00 -7:00 p.m. & 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Vito A. Gallo Senior Building – Community Room. 12 Chestnut Avenue, Summit, NJ

These one hour presentations will provide volunteers with general information on how to get involved with the 39 Morris Avenue project, as well as other volunteer opportunities. It will prepare volunteers for what to expect as part of their volunteer experience with Habitat, and what is expected from them. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend a volunteer orientation.

Supervisor Training & Workshop. 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Vito A. Gallo Senior Building – Community Room. 12 Chestnut Avenue, Summit, NJ.

The Supervisor Training Workshop is geared toward construction volunteers interested in learning more about supporting Habitat Construction Supervisors onsite by helping provide direction to small groups of construction volunteers to ensure meaningful and productive workdays. The first 90 minutes (6:30 – 8 p.m.) of the session will be a fun and informative demonstration on framing techniques; the last hour (8 – 9 p.m.) will focus on supervisor training.

About: In their first collaboration with the Summit Affordable Housing Corporation, Morris Habitat will break ground for six new affordable units on Morris Avenue in Summit—two three-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units for low and moderate-income households. The Summit Interfaith & Community Build is supported by over twelve congregations in the Summit area. Additional sponsors include the City of Summit and Union County HOME funds. The ceremony will be held outdoors at the site rain or shine, so please dress accordingly. A dessert reception will follow at Wallace Chapel AME Zion Church, one block away at the corner of Broad and Orchard Streets. If you are able to attend, RSVP by calling 973.891.1934.
